Buteyko's method has received a tremendous
amount of publicity as a cure for asthma because it is so
routinely effective at helping asthmatics eliminate their symptoms and reduce their need
for medication.
All asthmatics over-breathe. Because of this, they are constantly losing carbon dioxide, which is critical for the proper absorption of oxygen. The body's response to this situation is to constrict the airways in order to retain more CO2. Asthma medications, particularly bronchodilators, make matters worse by forcing open the airways, giving temporary relief while deepening the underlying problem. In an Australian study conducted in 1991 in 90% of the participants reported diminished or eliminated symptoms and reduction in the use of medication. Improper breathing pattern has been identified as the root cause of over 150 chronic health conditions.
